A physical examination and drug screen is required by the Department of Transportation  (DOT) for drivers carrying commercial loads on public roads. A DOT physical exam is the evaluation required in order to operate a commercial vehicle. It is referred to as a “medical fitness for duty” examination, which ensures that each driver is capable and healthy enough to successfully complete the duties associated with commercial driving.

What the DOT Physical Covers

– Vision

– Hearing

– Blood pressure/pulse rate

– Urinalysis

– Physical Examination

Individuals operating the following vehicles in interstate commerce need to have a completed DQ file:

– Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), or gross combination weight (GCW) or gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 10,001 pounds or more.

– Vehicles designed to transport more than 15 people, or more than 8 people when there is direct compensation involved.

– Vehicles transporting hazardous materials that require the vehicle to be placarded.
